Opening Mac Font Files in PC Transtype

Modified on Fri, 21 Jan, 2022 at 4:35 PM

Issue:

I am trying to convert legacy Mac font files (font suitcases) to Windows using the Windows version of TransType. How do I add Mac fonts to the source list?

Solution:

The problem is with accessing old Mac data-fork files (not only font files!) on Windows. The Windows file systems are very different, so it is not easy to do.

Pack the font file(s) on the Mac into a ZIP archive. Move the Zip file(s) to the PC. Do not unpack them! Add the Zip files directly to the TransType source window — TransType will "unpack" them and get all the Mac-specific information that it needs to convert the fonts.

Zip archives are supported in TransType 4 and later.
